Monthly tradition–Say “Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits”!

When I was very young, my Dad taught me the tradition/superstition of saying “Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits” on the first day of every month. The trick is that it has to be the first thing you say before you say ANYTHING else. If you’re able to do so, you’ll have good luck all month. It was a fun, silly Dad/Daughter tradition that we both enjoyed.

Many, many years later, I still try to do this each month! Sometimes I succeed–often, I blow it by saying something to the cats (yes–talking to animals does count!) before I remember what day it is.

This morning–February 1–I remembered! So I’m looking forward to a February filled with good luck. Hopefully part of that luck will be a little less snow. It’s been a rough winter!

How about you? Do you have any family traditions like this? What are your plans for this fine Saturday? Please share!

I love books, reading, writing, cooking, eating, reading while eating, and sharing thoughts about all of the above–plus a bit more! I usually post about topics relating to books and literacy during the week, and then participate in a variety of non-bookish memes on the weekend. Please feel free to join in! Some random things about me– –I have multiple bookshelves in every room of my home except the bathroom. They’re all filled to bursting. They help to make my house my home. –I have two cats who I love dearly, but who I definitely do NOT dress in human clothing. Ever. –I’ve never had a cavity. –I make a mean spaghetti sauce. –I’m a newcomer to yoga and I love it. –My day is not complete without a little chocolate.

  1. I hope your February is very lucky!

  2. Great. I’m not obsessive about enough things already. Now you add this whacky rabbit thing to my list. Thanks a bunch, lady.

  3. Cute… hop…hop…hop…. hip hop!

  4. What a lovely tradition and hope you have lots of good luck in February 🙂

  5. I like that, but I like the snow too. I heard yesterday that there have been over 48 inches of snow in the Chicago area this year!

  6. Wishing you a very lucky month!

  7. Awfully silly but I do this too. 🙂 Forgot this month. Oh, dear!

  8. I hope your good luck starts with tomorrow. It is ground hog day. I am not superstitious either but I do go around ladders and do abruptly change paths so the black cat doesn’t walk ” in front” of me and stuff like that.

A blogging friend of mine used to start his 1st day with rabbit, rabbit. Then the rest of us as we commented would start with the R R think. He quit blogging but we are FB friends. I’ll check him out now.

  9. I’m told that black cats are lucky, if you own them. hehe
