  1. How did you choose your baby’s or pet’s names? My male cat is named Dickens because I was working in a bookstore when I adopted him, and he also looked like he was going to be a “little dickens”—and he is! (Well, he’s not so little anymore!) My female cat is named Miss Maggie because she just looked like a Maggie, but she also looked like she was going to want to be addressed a bit more formally.
  2.  Have you ever been fishing? Once or twice when I was a kid. I’d rather just be on a boat or on the shore with a book and not mess around with the fishing part.
  3. Have you ever had your national flag painted on your face? Nope
  4. What was the last social faux pas you made? I can’t think of any.
  5. What makes you nostalgic? Old letters.
  6. What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done? The last scary thing I remember is driving home alone on a narrow stretch of two-lane, unlighted road in a horrifying combination of fog, blizzard-like snow, and darkness. I couldn’t make out any landmarks to figure out where I was. I never want to do that again.
  7. What fairy tale character would you most associate with? I’m coming up blank here…let’s move on!
  8. How much do you tend to swear in public? I only swear when I’m  around people that I’m very comfortable with—and I almost never swear in a public place.
  9.  If you ruled your own country, who would you get to write your national anthem? If he were still alive—Woody Guthrie.
  10. Who is the most intelligent person you know? I don’t know her personally (I wish!), but I think Rachel Maddow of MSNBC is one of the most intelligent people around today.
  11. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done for someone? Left work in the middle of the day—and in the middle of a deadline–to help a friend in crisis. Maybe crazy isn’t the right word–but it was absolutely the most spontaneous, most “I don’t care what the consequences are” thing I’ve ever done.
  12. What’s the worst piece of advice anyone has ever given you? “It’s too late for that.”
  13. If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be? Milk chocolate—the ultimate comfort flavor.
  14.  If you had to describe yourself as a car, what would it be? I know nothing about cars—on to the next!
  15.  If you had to describe yourself as an animal, what would it be? A prairie dog—they always look like they’re trying to figure out what’s going to happen next.
  16.  Do you think laughing at someone else’s misfortune is wrong? I guess it’s wrong unless you’re laughing with them, not at them.
  17.  If a loved one was to serenade you, what song would you most like them to sing? The Water Is Wide. A couple of the verses make it the best love song ever.
  18. Would you ever let your parents pick out a partner for you? I wouldn’t let ANYONE pick out a partner for me.
  19.  Have you ever tried spam? (the meat product) My dad likes spam, so I’m sure I was convinced to try it as a kid.

I love books, reading, writing, cooking, eating, reading while eating, and sharing thoughts about all of the above–plus a bit more! I usually post about topics relating to books and literacy during the week, and then participate in a variety of non-bookish memes on the weekend. Please feel free to join in! Some random things about me– –I have multiple bookshelves in every room of my home except the bathroom. They’re all filled to bursting. They help to make my house my home. –I have two cats who I love dearly, but who I definitely do NOT dress in human clothing. Ever. –I’ve never had a cavity. –I make a mean spaghetti sauce. –I’m a newcomer to yoga and I love it. –My day is not complete without a little chocolate.

  1. I agree, that is bad advice. Unless it’s hemlines being discussed, then it’s too late for super short anything!

  2. I love your answer about Rachel Maddow.

    • I just love her! She’s wicked smart–yet doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously. I don’t always TOTALLY agree with her–OK, I agree with her 95% of the time–but I always respect her opinion–and I admire her fearlessness.

  3. I love Rachel Madow , if I am turning channels and she comes on I stop to listen, now if Nancy Grace comes on I go somewhere else.

  4. I’ve now located our differences, I make social faux pas all the time… I named my daughter Bethany as I wanted a name a little out of the ordinary but not totally unusual like mine…. my son was named cos I wanted something that flowed fir the Xmas cards etc. He is called Owen. Does that make me sound … shallow??

    • I never said I didn’t make them…I just said I didn’t remember any! 🙂
(I adore the name Bethany, and Owen is the name of a wonderful picture book by Kevin Henkes)

      • LOL, thank you – it didn’t occur to me until after I’d named him that they were both Welsh names and that’s why they went well together! Bethany is now (and has been for some time) Beth to everyone else but me. She told my other half off the first time she met him for ‘Full Naming’ her…. but that’s fine I always imagined she’d be a Beth as she got older.

  5. I love your pets’ names; they’re perfect! I will stop by again soon. Your answers are entertaining! 🙂

  6. Driving in bad weather is scary, nerve wracking and tiring. What a good friend you are for helping your friend in need, despite the consequences. I hope your employer was understanding.

  7. I’m going to have to look up the water is wide song.

  8. I’m a big Rachel Maddow fan, too. Though I admit Nancy Grace is a guilty pleasure. I look at this way — Rachel Maddow is the real deal, like a wrestler competing in the Olympics; Nancy Grace is the WWE.
